If you’re looking for an Italian of the highest calibre, Grattamacco is a name to remember. It’s a 34-hectare estate in Bolgheri, a splendid region that became famous in the 1970s as home to the first Super Tuscans. At the time, wine law prevented Chianti winemakers from adding Bordeaux grapes to the local Sangiovese, even though many recognised this might add considerable ‘clout’ to the wines. The mavericks went ahead and did it anyway and sold their wines as Vino da Tavola at prices even higher than the finest Chiantis. Grattamacco was one of the region’s pioneers, producing its first vintage in 1978. Superiore indicates grapes from its best sites, meticulously crafted, with a prolonged 21 months in barrel (40% new). One to tuck away.
