As usual, the Laithwaite family have been leading the way in fine English Sparkling wine, with Barbara’s Trophy-winning Wyfold and Henry’s Harrow & Hope. Until 2010 Henry had been more used to making reds in Oz and Bordeaux, but he and his wife Kaye wanted to return to England and hatched a plan. They planted a 10-hectare vineyard in Marlow with Chardonnay and both Pinots, then built a new winery in 2013. Henry’s had some of the best names advising him – the late Tony Jordan of Australia’s Moët et Chandon and the UK’s late King of Fizz, Mike Roberts. Using Champagne’s classic grapes and method, this fizz, based on the fine 2018 vintage and aged 32 months on lees, has delectable berry complexity and toasty length. A great celebration bubbly.
