Toro has been growing grapes for centuries but only recently has this region shown its strength for top end wines. It lies in the heart of Castilla y León, northwest of Madrid. In the past, wines from here were extremely alcoholic – 16% vol was not uncommon – but new methods introduced by the next, well travelled generation of winemakers have changed their profile dramatically. Made from Tinto del Toro (a thicker skinned Tempranillo), the best reds are fruitier, with weight and complexity. Unoaked and using old-vine fruit for intensity, Joya del Río (meaning Jewel of the Duero) is a celebration of the winery, founded over 50 years ago, and the wine's Scottish born winemaker, Pamela Geddes. Recommended with red meats, game or strong cheese.
