Austria makes some really outstanding wines – beautifully balanced, elegant reds and mineral-zipped whites – yet we rarely see them in the UK. That’s why Blauer Zweigelt, the nation’s most widely planted red grape, isn’t better known. A crossing of two other Austrian varieties created by Dr Fritz Zweigelt in 1922, it’s well suited to cool climates and produces silky fruit reds. And this Reserve 2019 shows how well it ages too. It's from a small cellar founded in 1938 by members of the local Wine Growers Guild in Krems, a town with eight centuries of winemaking tradition. Loam and loess soils bring out the juicy fruit and minerally freshness of Blauer Zweigelt, all aged gently in oak. Enjoy with white meats, meatier fish or a rice pilaf.
