Sancerre is arguably the world’s greatest expression of Sauvignon. La Damnée comes from one of the region’s steepest vineyard slopes and has amazing purity and freshness. That’s particularly true of the top-quality, tiny-yield 2021 vintage.
The chalky-clay vineyards of Les Monts Damnés in Sancerre are formidably steep. The story goes that growers so dreaded having to work on ‘those damned slopes’ that the name stuck. It is not unheard of for grape pickers to strap on a cushion as protection in case they slip. But the risks have attendant rewards – namely distinctive, intensely flavoured, elegant wines. Bruno and Thierry Prieur come from a long line of Sancerre winemakers, and out of their 30 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc consider La Damnée their best. 2021 was a challenging vintage – frost, mildew and storms. Yields are 50% down but quality is all there. This wine has a perfect balance of ripe fruit and crisp acidity, especially good with fish, oysters or grilled goat’s cheese.
"A very fine expression of Sancerre from a top vintage and a great family estate"
