La Tire 2020

Fitou AOC

Jeff Carrel’s La Tire isn't shy of an award or two. Each vintage this classy Carignan-Syrah attracts high praise from critics. Jeff sources grapes from high-up slopes, difficult to access. All the richer for that, with peppery black fruit and spice.

Fitou was one of the Languedoc's first appellations to gain a UK following with its warm-fruit, authentic reds. Here we present La Tire! Why the name? Because eccentric winemaker Jeff Carrel loves his Deux Chevaux (aka the 2CV) and ‘La Tire’ is French slang for the car. For Jeff, the 2CV is symbolic of French automobiles and was commercialised in 1948, the same year the Fitou appellation came into existence. Every year he sources the grapes from a tiny domaine, high in the hills, whose vines were due to be grubbed up if Jeff hadn't stepped in. Intense notes of blueberries, blackberries and pepper for freshness, it’s the kind of red you can sit back and enjoy, perhaps after a scenic drive through the winding landscape. Drive on my good man!

"La Tire is a fruit-filled glass of raspberries and cherries. Darn fun to taste" Joe Czerwinski
