This mighty Châteauneuf has had a Gold-laden decade, including two for this 2020. It was a great year for this appellation, balancing powerful rich fruit with an elegant freshness. A wine brimming with a luscious, spicy flavour at a great price.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous red of the southern Rhône, adored for its big spice and warm, ripe, velvety fruit. That’s particularly true in 2020 when a hot, dry vintage brought a gorgeous richness to the wines, balanced by a surprising freshness. Le Prince de Courthézon is made at Châteauneuf’s only co-operative winery by award-winning Thierry Ferlay. All the grape growers are part owners, so maximising quality is of utmost importance to them. They work with ancient, low-yielding vines to deliver not only a lovely intensity but complexity too, explaining this wine’s medal-winning record. Mostly Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvèdre adding colour and aromatic nuances, this wine is best decanted early. Serve with a rich casserole.
