Château Lagrange is one of just 14 estates granted Troisième Cru Classé status is the 1855 classification, In 1983, Japan's Suntory purchased it and, with new funds behind it, the director, Marcel Ducasse, set about renovating the 115 hectares of vineyards and its cellar. Part of the increase in quality is its production of a second wine, made from the grapes of younger vines or vats that don't quite make the Grand Vin. Les Fiefs is Cabernet-based, with good portions of both Merlot and Petit Verdot, all grown on the estate's prized Gunzian gravel soils. At just 24 metres altitude, the property is the highest in the appellation! Handpicking, careful fermentation, with ageing in oak, 20% new, all add to the credentials of this elegant claret.
