Lying at the centre of the original appellation, Chianti Classico defines the region’s top echelon wines. This is a superb red from the Taddei family, who have owned the 180 hectare Lornano estate since 1904. Their award winning winemaker is the exuberant and talented Franco Bernabei, a former ‘Winemaker of the Year’ whose nickname is Mr Sangiovese. This complex Classico, with four years age and plenty of ageing potential, is from the outstanding 2016 vintage, the warm weather of which ripened the grapes to perfection. Aged for 18 months in fine French barriques, this red is complex and well structured with long ripe berry and spice notes. Best enjoyed with classic Italian cuisine: wild mushroom risotto, beef carpaccio or saltimbocca.
