Lyeth Red Sonoma Meritage 2020

Sonoma County

Founded in 1973, Lyeth Estate was a pioneer in high-quality Californian Bordeaux-blend. Using grapes from Sonoma County's prized Knight’s Valley and Dry Creek, this fine, velvety red was barrel aged to lend complexity to its bold raspberry fruit.

On a trip to Bordeaux in 1972 with his Colorado-banker dad, Chip Lyeth fell in love with wine. He returned home, studied winemaking at California's top spot UC Davies, and 9 years later established Lyeth Estate. His passion for Bordeaux never left and, with a handful of other pioneers, they founded the Meritage Association – champions of top-notch Bordeaux blends of California. This was revolutionary at the time, when single varietal labels were all the fashion. Their Sonoma Red exemplifies this style using a blend of all 5 Bordeaux varieties: Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. With rich, velvet-textured raspberry, cherry, and pepper flavours and rounded tannins, this is an opulent red, great with steak.

"What a red! Wonderfully intense, beautifully nuanced and simply delicious. Sonoma at its finest" Kristina Spencer
