Assyrtiko is a top white grape of the Greek Islands. Many of its wines are from Santorini, but on Crete's high northeastern coast, it also excels. Sunny days and cool nights thanks to coastal breezes and 580m elevation mean the berries take a long time to ripen. All the better for aroma, flavour and freshness. This white comes from a family winery, founded in 1966. It is devoted to the rare and indigenous grape varieties of the island – an exciting prospect for wine lovers who want adventure. Their Vóila Assyrtiko takes fruit from special ungrafted vines (most have to be grafted onto US rootstock), which adds to the intensity. No wonder, this wine has scored such a huge haul of awards. An ace white solo or with seafood and chicken souvlaki.
