Maison Joseph Drouhin Volnay 2016

Volnay AOC

Jancis Robinson MW declared 2016 a "seriously delicious vintage", although much depleted in size. Drouhin is a first-order family domaine and their village Volnay is a very fine example. Supple berry fruit developing earthy spice and floral hints.

Established in 1880, Joseph Drouhin is one of the most famous names in Burgundy. Andrew Jefford writes: “Quality is high throughout the range, with the Drouhin style one of great finesse and purity” (The New France). It is today run by Joseph’s great grandchildren – Philippe in charge of the vineyards, Veronique head of winemaking and Frédéric CEO. In line with their belief that great wines begin in the vineyard, they champion all organic and biodynamic methods throughout. This pretty, supple fruit Volnay from a small vintage was aged in barriques, one fifth new, for nearly 18 months. It's beginning to open out to display ripe berry notes with a touch of spice and silky tannins. Decant and serve with duck confit or mushrooms en croute.

"With age, the aromas take on notes of ripe or candied fruit, mushroom and mild spices" Veronique Drouhin
