Boasting more vineyards than all of Australia, Sicily is a hotbed of exciting wines. It's got a great, coastal cooled climate, sloping vineyards, a myriad of soils. The only surprise is that its wines aren't better known. Merlot thrives in the vineyards of the northwest of the island, producing a wide range of delicious styles, from rich and deep to light and easy-going. This is bang in the middle. It comes from the Colomba Bianca winery. Named after the local herdsmen who graze their sheep and goats on the high pastures near the vineyards, Mandriano has gentle, plummy fruit and silky smooth tannins. A ripe, juicy red that’s perfect for everyday drinking, especially with barbecued meats, pasta dishes and Italian cheeses like Pecorino.
