Borsao Reserva is from a hugely impressive cellar in the heart of Campo de Borja, the home of Garnacha. The winery has a phenomenal reputation and has received international acclaim. As Robert Parker wrote “If you have not yet discovered the great values of Bodegas Borsao, it’s about time you do” –www.robertparker.com
Borsao is located in Campo de Borja, a small wine region just east of Rioja with fewer than 20 wineries in total. What makes it special is that it’s home to a plentiful supply of old vine Garnacha grown at relatively high altitude
Bodegas Borsao is one of the leading Garnacha producers in the world and put Campo de Borja firmly on the wine map. As Jancis Robinson MW writes in The Oxford Companion to Wine, it has “revolutionized the region”
The combination of poor, stony soils and old vines means yields are tiny with small berries giving concentrated fruit flavours. What’s more, as most of the vines are bush-trained, they need to be harvested by hand which ensures only the finest grapes arrive in the cellar.
Tasting note: The 2014 vintage release of Borsao Reserva combines the rich, generous fruit of the Garnacha grape with the silkiness of Tempranillo and the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon. Ageing in fine French oak barrels adds a creaminess of texture and gentle hints of spice.
