Chile's wines first came to prominence around 25 years ago, as consumers were bowled over by their elegant, supple, Bordeaux style reds. They had more ripeness than European Cabernets, but were leaner than say Oz. Then their Sauvignons hit our shelves, followed by their charming Chardonnays. Casa Elena is from a family owned bodega, Cremaschi Barriga, situated in the Maule Valley. They grow the Bordeaux classics, both red and white, and we love them. However, they also champion Chardonnay, making this bright, fresh style. Cool fermented, it's all fruit and no oak with intense peach and apple flavour as well as melon and blossom hints. Chill down and serve on its own any time, or with chicken with tarragon, salmon en croûte or creamy pasta.
