Clefs du Pontif Marsanne Viognier 2018, IGP Pays d’Oc
If you’re looking for an easy-drinking white to carry you through the festive season with ease, this bestselling French favourite should be top of your list.
Paying homage to the great whites of the Rhône Valley, Clefs du Pontif is a blend of Marsanne, the key grape of white Hermitage, and Viognier, the grape behind Condrieu. It makes a formidable partnership with the Viognier bringing lots of ripe peachy fruit and Marsanne adding a rich mouthfeel and gentle nuttiness. It’s made for us by Languedoc pioneer Marilyn Lasserre, who initially trained in Bordeaux and has worked in wineries around the globe. She has been instrumental in the renewed success of Languedoc wines and her wines have become firm Averys favourites.
By picking grapes in the cool of the night and fermenting at cool temperatures without any oak, Marilyn’s locked in all the vivacious, ripe fruit and freshness. Look forward to refreshing peach and apricot flavours with a gentle touch of creaminess from lees ageing. Delicious with canapés, grilled fish or white meats in creamy sauces.
Cave Saint Desirat Syrah 2016, IGP Ardèche
The Northern Rhône produces the world’s greatest Syrahs with the likes of Côte Rôtie and Hermitage fetching hundreds of pounds per bottle. But you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy classic Syrah from this fine wine region.
Cave Saint Desirat is located in Saint-Joseph on the steep slopes of the Northern Rhône . But this Syrah comes from the lower slopes – still classic granite soils but outside the Saint-Joseph appellation – hence the attractive price What’s more, winemaker Jean-Luc Chaleat uses the same techniques to craft this Syrah as he does for his celebrated Saint-Josephs. So all the grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected, with some macerated in whole bunches to give lush, fruity flavours.
Made from 100% Syrah and unoaked, this is full of silk-like red berry fruits with hints of bay and black pepper. Soft and supple with an unmistakable northern Rhône Syrah savoury character, it’s a great match for charcuterie, terrines and cheeses.
