For the ultimate in Pinot Gris/Grigio character, head for Alsace in northeast France. This is a luxurious, rich white from a cellar in the centre of the Grands Crus areas. Displaying creamy, ripe apricot fruit, this white has elegant, minerally bite.

Alsace is a picture postcard patch of northeast France, peppered with pretty villages that wouldn’t look out of place in a book of German fairy tales. The Germanic influences don’t end there – here, the vineyards are planted with Riesling, the three Pinots and Gewurztraminer, rather than Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Winemakers even use the tall, slender – and far more elegant – bottles as favoured by the Germans. Although it’s a cool part of France, Alsace is also the country’s sunniest region. And this combination leads to clean, crisp whites of superb fruit purity. You’ll notice that in this Pinot Gris, which offers ample apricot notes undercut by crisp, stony minerality. A top wine to savour solo or with creamy white meat and fish dishes.
