Discover the best value, richly flavoured Portuguese reds in our cellars
Portugal is home to hundreds of little-known grape varieties that grow almost nowhere else in the world. It’s what makes the wines of Portugal so deliciously different. What’s more, they’re still unbelievably good value.
For just £7.99 per bottle, you can enjoy Portuga, a smooth, berry-scented red from José Neiva Correia at Casa Santos Lima, twice winner of Portugal’s ‘Winemaker of the Year. Next is Terras do Pó made mainly from Castelão, a small, dark-skinned grape that boasts incredible depth of flavour and comes into its own in the sandy vineyards of the Sétubal peninsula, just south of Lisbon.
From the sun-baked Alentejo region, you have Atlântico, a bramble-rich red made from native Portuguese grapes with hints of spice from barrel ageing. And last but not least is luscious, dark Socalco, an Averys exclusive made from Port grape varieties grown on the steep, terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley.
Averys began in 1793 and over the years, the family has built its reputation as one of the UK's most pioneering wine merchants.
