The Douro Valley is one of the most revered wine regions in the world, famous for its Port. Due to incredibly steep vineyards and naturally low yields, making wine here is labour-intensive and notoriously expensive. That’s why Douro reds are among Portugal’s highest priced which just makes this one all the more remarkable. Socalco is an Averys exclusive made by two of the most ground-breaking winemakers in Portugal. João Portugal Ramos is arguably Portugal’s most famous winemaker and has been instrumental in the quality revolution of Portuguese wines. Whilst José Maria Soares Franco was winemaker of £200 per bottle Barca Velha, the Douro’s top wine, for 27 years. In 2007, they joined together to start a new venture in the Upper Douro and not surprisingly, the results have been fantastic. We’ve been working with them since the early days and can confidently say that their wines are among the best value you’ll find in the Douro, if not in Portugal. As in previous vintages, the 2017 is made from classic Port grape varieties and marries intense dark fruits with juicy berry freshness.
