You wouldn’t believe that vines could grow in the sandy soils of the Freitas familys estate in Setúbal. But they positively thrive, producing wines that have earned the family more than 60 gold medals in the last decade alone. This Syrah-rich find is wonderfully rich, juicy and easy to enjoy.
Casa Ermalinda Freitas is run by fourth generation Leonor Freitas, who has been awarded a ‘Comendadora’ (equivalent to a damehood) for her services to Portuguese wine
The estate is breaking new ground in Portugal’s male-dominated wine environment, with Leonor’s daughter Joana following in her mother’s footsteps
This is a seamless blend of Syrah – which loves the sandy soils of Setúbal – and full-flavoured local grape varieties
Tasting note: Deep ruby colour and aromas of spiced black fruit and vanilla. The palate is rich and smooth with blackcurrant, plum and cinnamon flavours to the fore. Gentle tannins too, making this a perfect choice with or without food.
