In 2007, Pierre-Henri Morel and the world-renowned winemaker Michel Chapoutier bought 8 hectares of top vineyards in three of Châteauneuf-du Pape’s finest lieu dits – Pignan, Bois Dauphin and Barbe d'Asne. Pignan grows almost exclusively Grenache, the vines in excess of a half century old, so you can expect real power and depth in this fine red. The two, Morel and Chapoutier, are very purist in their winemaking, and all of this 2008 Pignan is fermented and aged in inert, concrete vats, so it’s the wine’s amazing layers of fruity depth, lavender and herbal essence that you will be tasting. 12 years on, it has impressive maturity and complexity, still with a bit of mineral grip and tannin. Enjoy with simple meat dishes to show at its best.
