Halfway between the powerful Amarone style and classic Valpolicella, this dark, cherryish red is from Cantina Negrar, an award-winning cellar, not far from Verona. Talented oenologist Daniele Accordini works closely with small local growers, encouraging the highest standards in the vineyard as well as respect for the natural environment and biodiversity. For this red he has ensured plenty of richness, weight and complexity by fermenting the wine with a portion of partially dried grapes – the famous ‘Ripasso’ technique of Amarone. From a good vintage, the wine has rich cherry flavour, deep mocha notes and Valpolicella's attractive zip of freshness. Poggio al Lago pairs well with pasta with a rich ragu, game or mature cheeses. Best decanted.
