Principe Strozzi Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2018

Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG

Michelangelo may have liked his Vernaccia di San Gimignano golden hued and oxidised, a bit like sherry, but today’s Vernaccia whites are nothing like! From the Strozzi family, this is as fresh as can be – racy lime, nutty notes, vibrant and moreish!

Vernaccia is Tuscany’s most interesting white grape, making wines that are fresh and lemony with an attractive herbal complexity. It is at its best when from the fossil-rich soils of San Gimignano. As an aperitivo, this wine is a great way to start a dinner party and some lively conversation. The Strozzis, you see, were once powerful bankers, statesmen and rivals to the Medicis. Machiavelli began his illustrious career in their employ, and among their famous ancestors is one Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo, the ‘Mona Lisa’. The family are also related to Sir Winston Churchill. With irresistible citrus, peach and grassy herbal flavours, this subtle and elegant white is a great match for baked fish, antipasti, salads or a vegetable risotto.
