In 1974, industrial entrepreneur and ardent wine lover, Giuseppe (Pepito) Castiglioni bought one hectare of vines on a Tuscan hillside. So started a dream to make elegant, rich wines, not only from native grapes, but the varieties of Bordeaux, Burgundy and elsewhere. His equally pioneering son, Sebastiano, took over, converting the property to organic viticulture in 1988, one of the first in Italy to do so. Today Querciabella is regarded as one of the finest and most innovative of all Italy. They are biodynamic now too and wholly vegan. Batár is their glorious, opulent, yet mineral-fresh white, made from tiny-yield Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco. All barrel-fermented and lees aged in French oak, its complex, layered and rich, yet fresh.
