Douro DOC

With 100 Golds and ‘Winery of the Year’ twice, the Alves de Sousa family is one of Douro’s finest. Their flagship red Quinta da Gaivosa was described by Wine Advocate as “classiness personified”. Made from port’s great grapes and wonderfully complex.

Back in the 1990s, the Douro was only known for port. Table wine was almost unheard of. Then a handful of top Portuguese winemakers, including Domingo Alves de Sousa, began to show the world what brilliant wines, both red and white, could be made there from those scarily steep terraces. Now the wines are counted as some of the best in the world. Quinta da Gaivosa is the top red of the Alves de Sousa family. They have six quintas in all, but this is their original and best loved. They are a remarkable family with 400 medals since 1991, 100 of those Gold, twice ‘Winery of the Year’, and top marks for their wines and their ports from critics. This fabulous, cellar worthy red is an old vine blend of 20+ native grapes, carefully aged in barrel.

"Velvety texture was sensual, the finish gripping, the fruit showing brilliantly, defined and vivid" Wine Advocate
