Think of Argentina and Malbec instantly springs to mind. But surprise, surprise, this is not the only great red grape they champion. North of Mendoza lies San Juan, with vineyards at altitudes of around 700 metres. At these lofty heights, where the sun is strong and the air is cool, Merlot grapes produce wine that's soft and fruity. Here you’ll find Bodegas Antigua, an estate founded in 1990 by Don Luis Victor Chirino. A builder by trade and a huge wine enthusiast, he bought two wineries and land to plant with vines. Within four years he had transformed the historic property into a magnificent cellar, museum and art gallery, the walls of which are filled with local artists’ work. Light up those coals and enjoy this easy red by the campfire.
