Pomerol is home to arguably the greatest Merlot in the world, and the most expensive red wines in Bordeaux. But nestled near £2000-a-bottle Le Pin and Pétrus is the utterly outstanding, but rather quieter Château Certan de May. Sharing Pomerol’s classic dense clay, but with a sandy topsoil that allows for better drainage, its 45 year old vines deliver grapes of extraordinary richness and concentration. Writing for RobertParker.com, Lisa Perrotti-Brown described the 2017 as “elegantly played black fruits and earthy accents with a lovely frame of fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with a quiet intensity”. Ageing in 40% new oak has layered toast and defined spice notes into the wine, which will age tremendously for decades.

"Bold expression of preserved plums, blueberry compote, plus nuances of pencil shavings, forest floor" Lisa Perrotti-Brown
