Monti Selezione Barolo 2013

Barolo DOCG

There are few better introductions to the brilliance of Italy’s Piedmont reds and, king of all of them, Barolo. Modern in approach, Paolo Monti crafts silky elegant Barolo with rich layers of flavour that, unusually, are delicious relatively early.

Described by Parker as a young producer “of the modernist school”, Pier Paolo Monti is renowned for the close attention he pays at every stage of winemaking. It shows in the superb quality of his wines. He founded his estate in Piedmont’s Langhe hills in 1996 by purchasing 10 hectares of vines and building a state of the art winery. Here he grows six grape varieties, including Nebbiolo for his Barolo, plus Cabernet and Merlot. Over the years his wines have won many medals, which he puts down to attentive vineyard management. A superb 2013, a year said by Wine Spectator to be “an exceptional harvest for the late-ripening Nebbiolo grape”, this modern Barolo has smoky truffle, baked plum, rose and oak notes. Let it breathe and serve with game.
