Tokaji is the ancient wine of Hungary, once served at all the royal courts of Europe. However, it fell from grace as communism took hold last century. The great Hugh Johnson and fellow devotees bided their time, then when the curtain was lifted, were first in to invest significantly in rebuilding its reputation. They formed the Royal Tokaji Company, today’s leaders in Tokaji, cultivated the best Grand Cru sites (one of which is Betsek) and revived the great tradition. Their 6 Puttonyos is hardly ever made and, as a Single Vineyard, is even rarer. Like Sauternes, it uses noble rot grapes - the larger the Puttonyos, the greater the noble rot portion. This is a masterpiece of intense sweetness and acidity, with layers of remarkable flavour.
