In recent years, Sandeman has enjoyed runaway success. This is no doubt due to new owners since 2002 – the Guedes family. They have made huge investment in the cellar and vineyards and were rewarded in 2018 with the prize for the most awarded port brand: they had gained the most prizes in international competitions. Their 99-point 2016 vintage is one of the best. Winemaker for Sandeman, Luis Sottomayor, described the 2016 vintage: "The degrees of complexity, colour and structure make the 2016 wines absolutely exceptional." A cool, wet spring had affected flowering, while a mild summer slowed down ripening. The upshot was a vintage that was two weeks late with lower yields of outstanding concentration. This is a port to snap up and cellar.
