From a castle that dates back to the 11th century, this is a 96-pt, super fresh, dry Riesling. It's from under explored Austria, the wines are which have superb, pure fruit flavours and freshness. From very old vines, this is crisp with zesty lime.

We tend to associate the finest Riesling with Germany, possibly Australia too. However, Austria is another key source – its wines have a wonderful purity of fruit and freshness that suit modern tastes. The Gaisberg is a fabulous First Growth (Erste Lage) Riesling from Schloss Gobelsburg, an estate with a centuries' long history. That's not just back to the 11th century, but with evidence of settlers from the Iron Age. Its modern history, however, dates to 1996 when Willi Bründlmayer and Michael Moosbrugger took it over from the monks, to grow vines and make wine. It can boast some of Austria's finest vineyards, one of them being the slaty, gneiss soils and old vines of Gaisberg. This white makes a very fine apéritif or dinner party wine.
