The Douro is famous for port and now wine too. Due to incredibly steep vineyards and naturally low yields, making wine here is expensive. That’s why they don't come cheap. This red, however, is excellent value. Socalco is made by João Portugal Ramos, arguably the country's most famous winemaker, instrumental in the quality revolution of its wines, and José Maria Soares Franco, winemaker of £200 per bottle Barca Velha, the Douro’s top wine, for 27 years. In 2007, they joined together to start a new venture in the Upper Douro and the results have been impressive. We’ve been working with them since the early days and their wines are among the best value you’ll find. Made from classic port grapes, it has intense dark fruit and freshness.
