Cave de Berlou was established 55 years ago as a collective of growers in the Saint-Chinian area. They've been through some hard times but, with grit and determination, have survived, winning many top awards internationally. Saint-Chinian was one of the first area's in the Languedoc to gain appellation status – that was in 1982, although vines have been grown there since 785 – and remains today one of its best known. Berloup Vignes Royales is a classic blend – mostly old-vine Carignan grapes, which adds peppery black fruit and spice, along with Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Vinification by carbonic maceration ensures dark, mellow fruit is centre stage, along with wild herb, smoky liquorice and spice. Ideal with a rich, herby casserole.
