If you’re looking for a smart Chenin Blanc with amazing depth of flavour, this brilliant 2018 is bang on target. Established in 1928 in Stellenbosch, Stellenrust is one of South Africa’s most successful family wineries. As it is at many Cape estates, Chenin is something of a speciality. Few, however, lavish quite as much care on this Loire grape as this wine has enjoyed. Hence its array of trophies and awards. First, the fruit is hand harvested from old bush vines aged 30 years and more. After pressing, 88% of the fruit is fermented in stainless steel, while the rest is put into oak to give a greater degree of complexity. Five months on lees produces a creamy texture that makes the wine ideal to serve solo, or with chicken or sauced pasta.
