50 years ago, an unknown red named Sassicaia trumped the finest classed growth châteaux of Bordeaux in a blind tasting of Cabernet Sauvignon held by experts. That set the trend for Super Tuscans to become some of the greatest and most celebrated reds of Italy, a position they still hold today. Eschewing tradition they experimented with imposter grapes, Cabernet in particular, to make a substantial, ageworthy wine. Mario Incisa was the instigator of Sassicaia – he'd started to experiment in the 1920s, but the wine wasn't popular and remained for family consumption only until the 1970s. Then it became the most prized of Italy. Le Difese is also Cabernet-based, with Sangiovese, but made in an early drinking style. Silky, elegant and aromatic.
