The Bernard family have owned Château Bernot, in the ancient village of Saint Martin du Puy, since the 16th century. It’s been run by brothers Bruno and Pierre-Joel since 1981 and these days they’re returning to organic methods of farming. In the cellar, traditional winemaking techniques and modern equipment combine to produce a seamless blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has a ruby colour and great depth of flavour laced with dark plum, spice and cassis aromas. And thanks to the estate’s rocky subsoil, there’s also a mineral character, structure and freshness. It tastes way finer than its straight Bordeaux appellation would suggest. Already delicious to drink, it's best to decant first, or cellar for a year or so.

"Classic claret – ripe fruit and firm, rounded tannins. Open early and decant for full fruit flavour" Jennie Perry
