The Carmenère grape originated in Bordeaux, but it’s now the trademark red variety of Chile. De Martino was the first winery to label a wine as Carmenère and its pioneering spirit continues with sustainable practices and a focus on fruit driven wines. In 2011, it was Chile’s ‘Winery of the Year’. Winemaker Marcelo Retamal, “one of the most respected winemakers in Chile” (Jancis Robinson MW), is considered a Carmenère expert and for this cuvée he chose fruit from coastal vineyards situated on an old gravel bed, reminiscent of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. 2017 was a great vintage in Chile, with a warm, dry summer. The result is a luscious Carmenère that’s smooth and silky, with fresh black fruit and peppery notes. Try with rich, herby casseroles.
