This is a delightfully fresh Viura Chardonnay from Bodegas Fontana and a high up family vineyard in La Mancha. It’s so remote, there’s no chance of irrigation. All the better for flavour in the wine – it’s bright and lime fresh with crisp pear notes.
Tasting notes
Citrusy zip with a hint of peach and apple
Aroma
Lime, ripe pear and a hint of anise

Bodegas Fontana is a winery in central Spain that specialises in rescuing ancient plots of vines in danger of being abandoned. These vines tend to be so old that yields are minimal, so growers find they are not usually economically viable. But Bodegas Fontana steps in, paying growers a premium for the grapes as they make such great wine. Everyone’s happy! The dry, windswept conditions means vines stay healthy, so can be treated organically. This appetising white combines Spain’s most widely planted white grape, Viura (it’s the grape behind white Rioja too) with international star Chardonnay. A great balance of limey zip and the latter’s rounded apple character. Easy going and versatile – great solo or with lighter dishes, salad or seafood.
