Aglianico is one of Italy’s noble red grape varieties, with a class and complexity that puts it alongside Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. It’s known as ‘the Barolo of the South’ owing to its rich flavours and big tannins but without the reputation of its namesake, the wines cost a fraction of the price. Aglianico del Vulture was made a DOCG – Italy’s highest classification – in 2011 and is considered one of the best red wines in Italy. It comes from high on the slopes of the extinct volcano, Monte Vulture. These mineral-rich soils add lots of complexity and the high altitude (around 800 metres) means this region has one of the longest growing seasons in ItalyTre Stelle is made by Vigneti del Vulture, a small co-operative where winemaking is overseen by Alberto Antonini – former head winemaker at Antinori in Chianti and one of the foundersof the Super-Tuscan movementAlberto now works with talented young winemaker, Dennis Verdicchia, and together they are crafting high quality wines that capture the character of this unique region. Dense crimson red colour with a highly complex bouquet of black cherries, violets, chocolate and vanilla. Rich and spicy with a long savoury finish, it makes a great match for slow-cooked lamb, casseroles and hearty pasta dishes.
