If you like a white with lots of character, a bit different from the norm, try Viognier. Southern French by birth, it's been embraced by sunny Australia to exuberant effect. A big bouquet of ripe peach, blossom and spice, and just as tangy on taste.

Odd to think that Viognier, a native grape of the northern Rhône, was heading for extinction a couple of decades back. Then a renowned Californian winemaker, Bonny Doon, took a liking and its fortunes turned. Now it's adored for its bouffant aromas of spicy peach, floral notes and tropical fruit. Couple that with abundant Aussie sunshine and you can see where this wine is coming from. Hurray for Viognier. This is one from Riverina, the fruit basket of SE Australia. The grapes were picked in the cool early hours, fermented at a low temperature and bottled early to capture all that freshness and exuberance. Chill well and serve – a great choice for a gathering of friends, on its own, with salmon and spicy salsa or a noodle stir-fry.
