Vasse Felix was established by one of the Margaret River’s wine pioneers, Dr Thomas Cullity, in 1967, at a time when the region was unknown to the world. He planted vines and by his second vintage in 1972 had won Gold with Riesling, followed by Cabernet in 1973. Since then Margaret River’s reputation has soared. It is still one of the world’s most remote wine regions, but its fame is widespread. Vasse Felix is now owned by Paul Holmes à Court, who belongs to a family of adventurous entrepreneurs – in wine, theatre, even horse breeding. This is a mesmirising Sauvignon, not as you know it. Part fermented with skins, all with wild yeasts, in part-new French oak foudres, this is "complex, textural, layered and long" (Halliday Wine Companion).
