Bodegas Alión was hived off from the Ribera del Duero‘s premier estate, Vega Sicilia, in 1991. Its mission was to make top class Riserva wines from Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo). The world’s top wine writer, Hugh Johnson, declares: “Quality is very high: oaky to be sure, but with fine tannins and exceptional length of flavour.” Wine Advocate describes the 2016 as "one of the freshest and most elegant vintages of Alión", and that's despite the wine's 15° alcohol. Using grapes from top sites within Ribera, next to those for Vega Sicilia, the wine is aged in 80% new oak, 95% French, for a year, the rest in bottle. Layered with nuances of complex flavour, a firm structure of fine tannins and terrific length, this is a red to savour. Or cellar.
