Germany’s Pfalz region is best known for Riesling, but other aromatic whites, like the floral-fruity Gewürz, shine there too, particularly in great vintages. Germany has been blessed with a run of great vintages and 2020 is certainly up with the best. Ernst Loosen is a shiny star of modern German winemaking, and one of the first to show that Germany could excel at crisp, dry whites, as well as beautifully balanced, medium-dry ones. Helped, of course, by a slightly warmer climate. His wines are renowned worldwide. The 18th century Villa Wolf estate is one of Ernst's rescue projects and this is an exotic, medium dry Gewürz, fresh, fruity and light on its feet. Ideal solo or with pan-fried fish, gently spiced Asian dishes or pungent cheeses.
