Mathieu Kauffmann was the first non Champenois to be appointed head winemaker at Bollinger. He was also the first to resign, rather than retire, from this position. The reason – the remarkable quality of the Von Buhl vineyards – 8 Grands Crus and 6 Premiers Crus. He knew he could make amazing wines there. He started with a new team in 2013 and the results speak for themselves. Founded in 1849, the Von Buhl estate has an illustrious history. Their wines were some of the finest in the 19th century. Indeed, German Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck, who adored a drop, chose the estate’s Riesling to toast the 1869 opening of the Suez Canal. Its name comes from Bismarck’s exclamation on tasting the 1873: “Ungeheuerlich gut!” – “Monstrously good!”
