Pinot Noir is the finicky grape prized in the pricy wines of Burgundy. But Germany also makes thoroughly appealing, complex Pinots, sensibly priced too! The wines are particularly charming from the warmer climate of the Pfalz. Take Von Reben for starters, a pretty red with bright berry notes from the award-winning Rietburg cellar. Founded in 1958, it's had half a century to perfect its winemaking skills, and is headed up today by the young and talented Dominik Meyer. The 2020 vintage, with all its sunshine, made for particularly fine quality. Gentle handling of the grapes and light oak, Von Reben sings with pretty fruit and a soft edge. It's versatile and easy drinking, so enjoy as you like with roast chicken, creamy pasta or simply solo.
