From a small family estate in Bordeaux's Entre Deux Mers, this is a beautifully mature, Gold medal claret. It offers amazing value – six years' maturity, from a very good vintage and well crafted. It is elegant with supple red fruit and good depth.

Not only was the 2014 vintage of Château du Bernat awarded Gold at Lyon and Mâcon, it was named a Best Buy and awarded 88 points by Wine Enthusiast. It's from the Rénier family, who bought the estate in 1962, with the current generation, Jean Philippe Rénier, taking charge in 2007. They are proud of their 29 hectares of vines, planted on ancient chalky soils, excellent for keeping the mature vines (10-30 years old) well drained. As you'd expect for this area of Bordeaux, Merlot is the main grape and thrives on these chalky soils, with both Cabernets playing a minor role and a little Sauvignon Blanc grown for white wines. Matured in vat and bottle, this claret sees no oak, but matures very well and slowly. Enjoy with classic dishes.
