Here’s a prime example of why it pays to visit wineries when you buy their wine. On her recent trip to Chile, buying supremo Beth Willard was in the cellars of the Errázuriz Ovalle family sampling their 2019 vintage. When she asked about the one tank she hadn’t tried, winemaker Victor Baeza said: “That? It’s the last of my 2018 Malbec. Want a taste?” Beth was seriously impressed – even more so when she heard the price she’d pay if we took the lot. After a quick email exchange, the deal was done and this magnificent Malbec was on its way to Blighty. Beth said the fruit purity really struck her, thanks to the cooling influences of the Pacific and the higher altitudes. It’s fine sipped solo, or with steak, rich vegetarian dishes or cheeses.
