Austrian wines are seldom seen outside the country’s borders – which is the only reason that Grüner Veltliner, the nation’s finest white grape, is not known better. This classic example is from a small winery in Krems, a town with 2,000 years of winemaking tradition (noted for its quality by the Roman emperor Probus in 276!). It’s situated on the banks of the famous River Danube where clay and limestone soils “imbue the finest Veltliners with a density all of their own” (Jancis Robinson MW). After hand harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed to extract only the most delicate flavours. This is a classic ‘GrüVe’ with spicy peach and pear fruit and a peppery finish. Perfect for partnering seafood and chicken dishes, or spicy Asian cuisine.
