The Wine
In the NW corner of Rioja, flatlands gradually rise to soaring mountains. It’s here that the Rioja Alta vineyards begin, a fine enclave of Spain’s greatest wine region. The extra elevation imparts a refreshing quality and allows the grapes to ripen slowly to full flavoured perfection. Since most Rioja wines blend grapes from across the region, you’ll almost never see Rioja Alta on labels. In fact, only two villages are allowed to do so. In one, you’ll find a winery founded by consultant Juan Antonio Leza’s father. Here, all grapes are supplied by growers he considers friends or family. Sourced from 40-year-old vineyards up to 600 metres in altitude, this Reserva is elegantly fresh with layers of complexity. Ideally open early and decant.
