Nebbiolo is Piedmont’s superstar grape, with “qualities comparable to the very best Burgundies”, says writer Hugh Johnson. Its finest incarnation is Barolo, here from a stand out winemaker. Never before released, this is an, intense, sleek Barolo.

The Wine
There are few regions in Italy that can compete with Piedmont for range of grapes and styles of wines – from powerful reds to crisp, light whites and fizz, too. One of Piedmont’s finest family estates is that of Aldo Vajra – a traditionalist, who makes an outstanding Barolo, Dolcetta and Barbera among his reds. Aldo prides himself on the elegance and complexity of his wines. This is the inaugural vintage of Lagarbiano Barolo, the grapes for which were sourced from two steep blocks on the west side of the region. There the soil is calcareous, which brings a freshness to the wine. From an outstanding, classic vintage, the wine is aromatic, with dark cherry and rose petal notes. A fine match for game or red meats or wild mushroom croustade.
